I loved it. it was so fun and amazing. can't wait to show it off to my cousin and my dad and let my cousin play around with it and let her show her creation off to all her friends. this is a great a way to express the artist in you and get those creative juices flowing the possibilities with this experiment are endless.

My compliments and congratulations to the people who created this. So much about computer-based "fun" is self-servingly bland; Bomomo is inspiring and -- for lack of a better phrase -- wonderfully trippy. I agree with "mel" -- this is not cute. Kittens are cute. This, instead, is elegant and -- again -- inspired.

This ought to have an API so that people can make their own plugin brushes and easily implement them... also needs color selection tools. That would be truly powerful.

Oh, and maybe support for interpolating extra frames for fast-moving objects, so that you can have smoother lines if you wish?

how come some of these expiraments work better for other browsers than the one Google made?

Reply to this comment
By McDude on April 13, 2009

Because the people who make these experiments are not the same people who wrote the underlying javascript execution core software stuff. They don't really have inside knowledge about its intricacies, and therefore, the efficiencies of the respective functions.

They test to make sure it works in Chrome 2, and at a reasonably fast pace, and leave the rest of the browsers' performance optimization to chance. Usually, if there's a bug that makes the experiment completely dysfunctional in a browser, they will try to make a fix for it (such as the Flash version of this one, to give IE users something to fool with), but they don't really mess with it if it's just going slow.

Unusable (slow) with Ubuntu LTS, FF 3.0.7, AMD 3500+

Usable (fast) with Ubuntu 8.10, FF 3.0.7, Intel 2140.

Btw, "Ubuntu LTS" doesn't mean anything. You have to put the version number and/or the name, for example "Ubuntu 8.4 Hardy Heron", which I guess is your case.

I thought this was written for Chrome specifically and yet one can't save a drawing unless one uses Firefox?! strange..

Actually it works on several browsers and was not specifically created for just one browser. Last time I checked, Chrome was running it fastest, though. The one browser really causing troubles was IExplorer due to lack of Canvas support...

Hey -- you guys should try setting the context's lineWidth to a sub-pixel value -- like 0.5 ... This was you get nicer, thinner looking lines. For example: http://alinear.net/index2.html/

Wow, absolutely love it, and it works flawlessly in Chrome of course. My only (minor) complaint is that the brushes reset if the cursor goes outside the canvas, any way to make them keep on working along the edges regardless of mouse position?

For IE, did you try using excanvas (excanvas.sourceforge.net) which uses svg to implement a canvas in ie (might be easier than flash)

Yeah, I did, but Excanvas was much too slow -- it was getting slower with every new line being drawn. There was no such speed slow down in Canvas, I guess the difference is whether or not the drawn stuff is treated as objects vs simply being pushed onto the same bitmap (once drawn). I used Excanvas for static images before but until it may perhaps be changed to be faster, wouldn't consider it for animation again.

Yeah, only for IExplorer we had to program a complete alternative fallback in Flash. C'mon IExplorer, support Canvas already :)
